February: A Month of Posts In Review.

February was wonderful! Looking back through all of my posts, I felt energized, productive, and ready to meet March head on. Here is some of what happened:

I created 2 lovely tutorials this month, and I'd love to keep the momentum going and create at least one every month to come.

January kicked off my sewing 101 project, and I continued to work through my text 1-2-3- SEW in February too, completing the 2nd chapter. I'm gaining confidence with each new skill I learn and I'm finding that I actually enjoy sewing.

I got to make some things just because:

1. I got creative on the theme "Month Of Love" for our February Blogging Business Artisans challenge.

2. I made a sweet little girl's birthday purse.

3. The Mr. received some lovely hand stitched V-Day coupons.

Content: This month I reestablished my love affair with writing. Here were some of the topics I covered:

1. I discuss my passion for cooking from scratch & reveal some of my favorite recipes.

2. One Friday Finds Artist Interview was especially inspiring as artist Abernathy Parade gushes about her life as a puppet mastermind, NYC art bearing traipser, and how to live every day fueled by art and hope.

3. I get serious about defining the future of my business.

4. The great wool debate: do you love it or hate it?

February turned out to be a great month for the shop too. My Knit Heart Brooches sold like crazy before Valentine's Day. I ended up relisting them daily for a few weeks there. I made a total of 13 sales, and while they were low ticket items and I didn't make that much money, I'm truly overwhelmed with this bit of success!

Tutorial: How To Make A Card Stock Gift Box.

I don't always have gift wrap for every occasion on hand, but what I do have, always, is quite a large supply of card stock. So when it comes time to wrap presents last minute, more often than not I dig around in my paper supply trays to make pretty gift boxes rather than run out to the store for paper. I've decided to assemble a tutorial for you as I found myself in just that situation this week getting ready for a dear friend's baby shower.

These gift boxes can be customized to any size, and for any occasion!

What you'll need:

1. 2 sheets of card stock- I'm using 12x12" sheets, but if your gifts are larger than that, of course you'll have to buy bigger sheets.

2. Your gifts!

3. Ruler or T saqare

4. Scissors, glue, & a pencil

5. Any "extras" you like to incorporate into your gift wrap. I'm using ribbon & a heart paper punch to finish the boxes off with cute gift tags.

What You'll Do:

1. Math It- Measure the length, depth, & width the gift you intend to box, leaving a little wiggle room. Mine will need a 6x9x1" box. To figure out the border, what will be left for the box's depth, subtract the bottom of the box (longest side first- 9") from 12" (the width of your paper), to get 3". Divide that by 2 sides to get 1 1/2 Inches of depth per side. Mark a line on each side to indicate your 1 1/2 inch borders.

2. The box must have the same depth on all 4 sides, so keeping our 1 1/2 inch border on each side, add the box's width (6") to the border (3") and subtract from the paper width (12") to get 3" extra, which must be marked and cut away. Next, mark out the 1 1/2" border on the final two sides.

4. Repeat steps 1 & 2 on a second sheet of card stock for a bottom & top piece of the box. Next, notice that each corner is marked off in a square. To create a tab that can be folded up and in to create the box's depth, snip from edge to border mark on just one of the square's lines. Do this to all corners.

5. Creating Depth- Line your ruler up on a border line. Using it to keep your fold straight & sharp fold up each side including the corner tabs.

6. Apply a little glue to the front side of each corner tab. Use a q-tip to spread it over the entire tab.

7. Putting it Together- Tuck the gluey corner under its side & hold firmly until the corner is stuck well.

Next, just place your gifts inside & finish off with a cute bow or whatever your heart's desire!

*Optional Modifications-
- Try experimenting with using different top & bottom box depths to have the bottom colors peaking out like in the first photo.
- Make the top box a little bit larger than the bottom for a less snug fit.

Made: Sewing 101- Raw Edge Applique Pillow.

Last Wednesday I alluded to my next sewing 101 project, which was to make another pillow with raw edge applique, but this time in a circle pattern.

If you are new to my blog, or otherwise need to catch up, read more about Project Sewing 101 here.

At the craft store I couldn't find a 25 x 25" pillow form, and since I thought that would be huge anyway, opted for the smaller one, the 18x18" square. But that meant that I'd have to do a bit of math and design modification for the applique design to come out right.

The circles are all a bit smaller than the given pattern, and I added in those 4 really small circles for both interest & because I miscalculated a bit!

In terms of the technique- I found sewing around the circles to be very challenging. (As you can see in the close up to the left, the stitches are WAY crooked.) But, they're all pretty centered and cut nicely. I think I would have used grey thread if I had to do this over so my wonky stitches wouldn't show up so much on the dark grey circles.

Another problem I noticed was that I forgot to buy the closure for the back of this pillow. Since I'm supposed to be learning new techniques, I know I probably should have waited and ran out to get it. BUT, I really just want to be done with pillows so I did a simple overlap closure instead.

So there you have it: the completion of all 3 chapter 2 pillow projects. Up next is a chapter on organizers where I learn to use interfacing, make pockets, and build structural projects! Wow...it looks very challenging, but I know I'm up for it.

Lately I've fallen off of the positive health changes wagon.

And I'm slowly trying to pull myself back on. Triggered by the holidays, I was just too tempted to revert back to old eating habits. Since my January goals post, I've tried all kinds of methods to keep myself on in check:

1. Joined fat secret and started tracking my daily calorie, protein, fat, & carbohydrates intake.

2. Put myself on a 6 day on/ 1 day off desert & alcohol restrictions.

3. Started a daily journal tracking my daily workouts, progress with #1 & #2, and I also wrote a bit about how I was feeling each day.

How long did all of these things last? Eh...just a few weeks each.

So the question then is, why do I keep falling off the wagon this year when last year I had a full year of successful diet, workout, & weight loss progress?

The answer is simple & also complicated:

Simple- I'm sick of it. I'm tired of devoting so much time to worrying over every calorie both in & out. I'm tired of making it something I have to record and think about constantly. I just want to live without the burden of being on a "system" each day.

------OK, I give you permission to skip this part if you'd like;)--------

Complicated- Last year I read A LOT of books pertaining to food. Eating clean and cooking from scratch is a big deal to me. While somethings are easy for me (eating healthy at breakfast & lunch, downing tons of water every day, baking all of our own bread & rolls, cooking dinner rather than going out to eat or eating prepared meals) there are still an awful lot of things that I find very challenging:

*Beer. We love beer in this house. Limiting myself to 1 drink/ week just isn't realistic. We are always trying new brews & let's face it: while alcohol is not central to a good time for us, it's just more often part of it than not. That's life.

*Dessert. Ugh. Don't get me started about my crazy sweet tooth! I'd go so far as to say I'm addicted to ice cream. And while I'm not great at baking, we always have ingredients on hand for cookies (since they just so happen to be the ingredients for fresh bread), so I often make batches of "emergency cookies" when I feel a craving coming on. No matter how late at night it is. *Yes I just admitted that.*

*Weird Schedule. I'm picky with working out. Let me interrupt myself to say I actually really, really DO like to work out. It's also easy for me since we have a treadmill in the house, various workout DVD's, and I belong to a beautiful year round pool. So the problem? My body needs first calories in- then digest time- then workout- then the ability to IMMEDIATELY eat afterwards. Call it a psychological thing, or maybe I really do burn crazy calories each day. BUT, that's just my body. So that means the usual situation is: I've eaten breakfast, then I'm fully engrossed in work & have to interrupt myself to go workout. It's hard to break away....

The Bottom Line: I just need to weigh what's really important to me against what's not and be totally, completely realistic & honest with myself!

1. I love to workout. I will figure out a great schedule, this will be no problem. I'm just in a weird spot right now.

2. I will continue to focus on my strengths: if eating a healthy breakfast, lunch, & snacks is a daily habit, then is it really necessary to make a federal case out of eating fried chicken once in a while for dinner? Mind you, we take the time to make it ourselves (in our deep frier- *yes I also admitted that*).

3. As for beer & ice cream: Eh. Can't a girl make her own mistakes sometimes? I could skim a few pounds off the top, but after last year's weight loss & maintaining in the general vicinity of that since, isn't a seasonal fluctuation forgivable?

Made: Sewing 101 Raw Edge Applique Pillow.

Continuing on my journey of working through the sewing instruction book, 1-2-3 Sew, this week I've reinforced skills learned in last week's project, and learned a new way to apply applique.

If you're new to my blog, or need to catch up, you can see the other projects I've completed so far here.

On to the work:

This project actually came before my last pillow in the book, but I skipped it since I needed to run out and buy some interfacing for it, but not for the next one. Little did I know, the next project didn't instruct to use interfacing because it was building applique skills and the interfacing in this project was supposed to help a novice piece it easier. Ah well. I'll try to get better with following the book in sequence!

I actually didn't end up using interfacing anyway- I found it easier to just pin the pieces & hold them while I stitched them secure. As you can see, I'm getting better with stitching straight lines, but they're still not quite even distances from the edges yet.

This pillow had a simple overlap back, and since I've already done this (& added a buttonhole closure) in the previous project, I felt totally confident. I think my confidence lead me to be speedy, and that led me to edges that are a bit crooked and off. Need to work on my focus!

Overall, I'm pleased with the way that this pillow came out. I'm still happier with the first one I made (pictured) though.

Next week I'll be showing off my final pillow & completing the 2nd chapter in the book, so stay tuned!

Friday Finds: Wedding Style- Country Shic Invitations.

I shared our engagement story of last June, but I know I've not really said much of a word about the wedding planning since! Sorry friends- you probably forgot all about it!

We really just wanted to stretch it out some and just enjoy being engaged. It's been nice, every day we grow closer and thoughts of the wedding seemed farther and farther from both of our brains until, after being hounded by friends & family members for quite some time, we decided it's finally time to dip our feet into the ~~hell~~ loveliness that can be wedding planning.

More about the detail of things later on, but generally, we will be having 2 outdoor receptions in relatives' backyards (one in the deep south & the other on a north eastern farm) so I thought it fitting to scout out some cute country chic wedding invitations on the pages of etsy:

Illustrated Watercolor Wedding Invitation

I spotted this beautifully themed watercolor invitation on Emmaline Bride and fell in love. The artist hand paints your customized portraits, text, and a floral filagree.

It got me to thinking how since our costs are very low (which I'll discuss later) why can't we splurge on the things we both value? I.E. anything artsy that we can insert into our affairs. So I started looking for more. Here are some other great choices:

A Day of Love: Valentine's Day In Review.

How was your Valentine's Day friends?

Mr. M & I have learned over the years that going out to dinner and fighting the crowds on Valentine's Day is not our idea of fun. I'm also not really into flowers or having someone spend money on me for things that I find unnecessary- so I specifically instructed my Mr. not to buy me anything this Valentine's.

Of course we still do something for one another, but it's always a more heart-felt and/ or handmade gift. This year I made him an army of little cards, each featuring a reason why I love him on the front & a coupon redeemable for things like "a beer run done by me," "a foot rub," and other niceties for him on the back.

With so many little cards I thought it would be great to write a clue on the back of each and organize a treasure hunt for the grand prize (a box full of more coupons!).

It was fun watching him scout about the house trying to figure out what I meant by each clue- gotta make it a bit challenging for your own entertainment, right?

In the end we had a blast, and now he's got a lot of little gifts to look forward to and space out as he likes:)

Scouting Out Wholesale Yarn Suppliers & The Great Wool Debate.

Lately, as part of my product evolution, I've been entertaining the idea of buying yarn wholesale. I'm planning to explore creating a line of knit winter wear & evolving my current line of handbags & purses such that I could make them to order in custom colors. In order to do this, I'd need a reliable supplier &/or my own stock of yarn, and to cut costs it might make sense to just break down an buy wholesale.

I'm in the very, very early stages of this. I've contacted just a few companies via email, and consulted some trusted atrsy allies who have gone through this process before. But I'd like to keep you informed of my progress and also request your participation in the process of both yarn scouting & designing since my main goal is to buy supply somewhere in between "what the people want" and what is of good quality & sustainable for me.

I've asked you what colors you prefer in scarves & coats and I really, really appreciate all of the responses I got. I value your opinions and am happy to have such a chime-in type of audience! I also asked you about the weight of yarn you prefer. But this week, I'm focusing on fiber-content.

At one of the holiday shows I sold at this winter, a lady picked up one of my scarves and said, "I have very specific things I look for in scarves: I am a daily MARC train commuter and I need something that I can throw in the washer and something that travels well- that's why I don't go for wool scarves." And some people just plain hate the way wool can feel, especially around their neck.

Here's my 2 cents: I'm a yarn snob. I value quality over convenience. 100% natural fibers are all that I usually pick up. And wool isn't always itchy. Picture a super classy blend of alpaca, cashmere, & silk. Sound nice? Sure. But do you know what that feels like??? Or how expensive a 50G ball is (can run you upwards of $14 commercially). Also, yarns like this can only be hand washed and air dried. Sigh.

I thought I found the perfect solution: 100% Superwash merino wool. It's still wool. And it's SO nice, and SO soft. And you can throw it in the washer & dryer. So I went to talk to my local yarn store expert about it since I've never really knit with it before. She said the bulky weight knits up stiffly, and all weights tend to loose shape in the washer- so hand washing is not necessary, but recommended. Sigh again. Not the perfect solution. I might try it out for myself though, despite, just to see.

So, I ask you: How do you feel, in general about the fiber content of your knitwear? Do you avoid anything that says, "hand wash only"? Do you hate or love any particular fibers?

Your two cents will be very helpful, and might just make it into another highly nerdy pie chart;)

Blogging Business Artisans February Challenge: Valentine's Day Theme.

Happy Valentine's Day All! In honor of the day, I'm going to show you a cute V-Day project I made:

Each month my Etsy team, Blogging Business Artisans, sponsors a challenge for us to make something following a theme. This month the theme was "Month of Love" to create something love related. I really "loved" this challenge because hearts have been on my brain for quite some time now. Some years I really get into Valentine's Day, and this happens to be one of those years!

I've already created something for my etsy shop for valentine's day (cute knit heart pins) and have decided not to make Valentines this year since I spent so much time making Christmas cards for friends and family. So I decided to make something cute just for me to display on my desk and make me smile while blogging away.

I saw this great tutorial on making watercolor ombre on design sponge. I decided to punch out a few hearts, and go for it. I even mixed a few colors on some, and painted designs as I wanted to.

Once they dried, I popped them on the sewing machine and made a few little garlands to display on my desk. I think they turned out pretty cute!

I continue chugging along in my newest project,
1-2-3 Sew. I had to skip project #4 due to missing supplies (and have since made a $117 trip to JoAnn's to stock up on materials for the next 6 projects- eep!). I'm realizing that working through this book on what I already have isn't always going to be an option, but I digress...

Project #5 was to make a pillow with applique decoration on the front and a button closure on the back. I was very excited that I could still use that linen that I have on hand from making curtains, and get rid of a few more of the fat quarters from my stash.

I was also excited at the prospect of learning to machine sew button holes & buttons!

The back turned out quite nicely I think. Piecing the larger panels was pretty easy, and I didn't realize that sewing a button hole is no more than just putting on the right presser foot, popping the button onto it, selecting the buttonhole stitch and pressing go. Really, the machine just takes care of it for you!

I couldn't quite understand the directions for sewing on a button, so I just did it by hand and promised myself to revisit this skill another time. So the list grows of skipped skills to catch up on:

1. pockets
2. buttons

The front, while complete, is a bit of a hot mess I'm afraid:

I'm still having issues with cutting fabric (as proper equipment isn't yet in my budget) and some of these required precision beyond my current skill. I'm also still struggling with smooth stitching. I didn't have clear thread, so just used white. Also- the book didn't say, any seamstresses out there know how exactly you are supposed to line up the applique stitch? Is the whole thing supposed to edge the applique or is it that the little triangle part is all that's supposed to be on it??

Now I could dwell on this project forever to make a perfect one, but I realized that the point of this project isn't to make 100 perfect pillows for me. It's to complete the book and I figure that since each project requires certain basic skills, I'll keep repeating them until I can actually get a good grip on them anyway, so why dwell any one project?

Scheduling Time For Growth.

It's time to stop, slow down, reflect & learn in order to grow.

Back on September 3, 2008 I opened the "doors" of my etsy shop with about as much knowledge about how one actually runs a business as I did about what I would actually sell. All I knew was that I love to make art. More art than I had room to store and that if I didn't make it, my heart couldn't be all the way filled.

Now, 3 1/2 years later, I have a much clearer idea of both. I've spent these years figuring out the business end: advertising, creating a blog and running it, marketing, networking, getting my trade name registered, etc. But lately I've come to realize that I've been deceptively neglecting the "what to sell" portion of that partnership pretty regularly over the years.

In discussing and dissecting the contents of my shop with friends over the last few months, I've realized one key thing: I am largely making pieces that I enjoy looking at, but that few (including myself) would actually want to use or buy in some cases. I do actually love what I make, but in style rather than color & functionality.

The Plan: Even though it will be hard for me since I'm so incredibly impatient, the future of my business depends on my taking some time out to learn new skills, think, plan, design, ask, and grow as an artist.

Action: While maintaining my usual blog & online routines, rather than focusing my creative energy on making more of my current products, I will be putting production on hold in order to:

1. Continue Project 1-2-3 Sew. I need to strengthen my machine sewing skills in order to be able to skillfully evolve my purses & bags line.

2. Research. This is the most important step, and one I've ignorantly never really invested much time in. I need to absorb current art, fashion, and trends. I need to scout out competition. I need to ask people what they like and why they buy. Most of all, I need to listen & figure out how to offer something a bit different from the rest.

3. Evolve My Current Products. I've already started doing color & style research, and will be shifting towards offering products that can be made to order offering customers specific color & personalization choices.

4. Blog Revamp/ Rebranding. While I will keep working under the name N. Fallon Design Studio, my brand will need an overhaul just like my work will. In addition, and as you can see, I've overhauled the blog, most of which was hand drawn. What do you think?

Little by little things will come together. I must remember to be patient with myself and that it's OK to jump out of the game for a bit in order to come back even better. Stay tuned for big changes in the future friends and know that I appreciate every. single. bit. of love you share with me!

A Little Bit of Love.

A few weeks ago, I hosted a giveaway on A Little Etsy Love with Med Beach Stones. The artist behind this shop lives in Israel, and collects heart shaped stones from the beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. She creates and sells art pieces and sets of stones that she finds. I truly adore this shop, and was so pleased when she wanted to send me some to show her appreciation for the giveaway.

I plan to incorporate these stones into a very special Valentine. Thanks so much Med Beach Stones!

Tutorial: Sewing 101- Mitered Corner Linen Napkins.

While I'm certainly no machine sewing expert, I've decided to compose a little tutorial on how to make mitered corner napkins as this is one project in particular that I've loved making for it's ease and simple elegance in the final product.

Pre Step: Before starting this tutorial, cut fabric of your choice (I'm using linen) into squares. The size will depend on your preferences, but a good standard size including seam allowances is 18 x 18", which will give you 16 x16" finished napkins.

*Optional 9. I decided to zazz up my napkins with a few rows of machine embroidery. If you are using light solid color fabrics, this can be a great way to give some interest to the work!

Made: Knit Little Girl's Play Purse

This week I made and shipped out a lovely custom order for a little girl's play purse. For Christmas, I made a good friend's little girl a similar purse, but unfortunately, in the holiday rush forgot to take photos before I shipped it off.

Later, one of my friend's neighbors saw her toting it around, and inquired about it since she has a little one about the same age. Since the little girl's birthday is coming up, my friend requested that I make one for her as a gift too.

I'm glad I got to make another one for exactly 3 reasons:

1. Now you get to see it.
2. Since my sewing 101 project, my machine skills and inventory of techniques have definitely increased and I feel 100% confident about the lining. I even got a little crazy and after hand basting the lining in, I did a zig zag machine top stitch. That gave me a confidence boost, because after all, the ultimate goal of this process is to be able to machine line all of my bags.
3. I'm debating creating a few more of them to sell at craft shows.

What Inspires You: Interview with Abernathy Parade.

Today I am very excited to introduce Abernathy Bland, artist, blogger, and an inspiration to

anyone attempting to step out on a limb a little too far with a blindfold on in pursuit of their

one true love. I preface this by saying that this is a long interview, but it is absolutely worth

reading every word and stalking Abby afterwards:

"Art is Dangerous" & "Because I Believe"

1. Please tell us a little bit about what you do.

"I am a tight rope walker.   Maybe that isn’t entirely factual, but it feels true. I am in a

constant artistic pursuit sans net. This is because I believe in the power of art. And the power

of trying. I don't have a day job to fall back on, I am an artist. When people ask what I do...

that is my answer.    My puppets and paint buckets have been trekking from my Virginia studio

to New York since 2006 where I work as a collaborator with Old Kent Road Theater, a

Brooklyn-based experimental theater company.   My drawings travel too. I will put my work

wherever anyone lets me.

Many of my drawings are done in part with a sewing machine. A lot of my recent work has

been illustration. I feel like my work is less loyal to a type of art making and more loyal to a

message... so I am often all over the place in my method.     I cherish [the] specific, eerie, and

clever. I value the spirit of the South, my childhood backyard of solid dirt, and my magic

family.  

 On my artistic pursuit I have encountered a number of heroes and villains. I document my

pursuit in my blog, Riding Bareback Beside A Train at abernathyart.blogspot.com. There, I

have learned to care madly about writing. And I have dreams of finishing a book- a big one-

full of art.   I keep a gallery at web.me.com/abernathybland. But one day soon I will have a

2. Your images are largely character based and carry inspirational

messages. I know many of them relate to your feelings regarding

the courage it takes to give up your 9-5 and pursue art and the

struggle that ensues. Would you be comfortable sharing an

example of this connecting to a specific piece?

"  Yes, I'm comfortable with almost anything. Oh, I love this question. I would like to/ can

gush for hours about the literal inspiration for these pieces. I think when I edit my words

and characters they start to apply to many situations. They are partially loved by someone

because of how they speak to their story- not mine.

 The piece- 'Sometimes My Crown is Invisible'-  this one is specifically about walking all over

big cities hauling art. It is about getting on a bus, arriving in NY, walking with a giant

puppet to a rehearsal space, walking out, and thinking: 'Wow- I worked all night on that and

just inconspicuously traveled a great distance with a giant black trash bag to deliver it to the

actors that were going to use it.' And no one around me at any given point has any idea what

I am doing or why. To me though, I am moved to do it and it feels very important. It is about

feeling very small and very big at the same time.

As a side note my characters are in backpacks a lot. I often feel like I wear a backpack

permanently. Because as an artist we just carry everything. Literally, at a front counter of a

store, I try to pay for a bar of soap and 27 markers spill from my purse onto the checkout

counter."

The Only Thing & Overboard

3. Part of the message on your blog is allowing art to infiltrate

every aspect of one's life to truly live creatively. Do you have any

tips, big or small, for my readers to jump start inspiration?  

"Yes. You know how in a film you watch what happens because someone has captured it

intentionally for you to look at? You have that same control in your life. I think people forget

that- to be intentionally aware. I think once you master that... you see everything. You get

sensitive. You get inspired. You get the wind knocked out of you. It is beautiful.  Like when I

run, I touch the walls and fences and buildings I run by. When you touch things in your

environment it just seeps in more. It sounds crazy, but I even know the smoothest wall in

town. It is on the lower part of the triangular apartment building where two roads intersect

into one.  I believe you should make choices that heighten your senses. I notice everything.

Sometimes it is amazing... because I see a lot of kindness or beauty. Sometimes I just hear

someone crunching so loudly I wish I was more blissfully unaware. :)   I think people forget to

be aware. Which is too bad, because they are missing out. and I refuse to miss out."

4. Keeping our work fresh means constantly seeking new sources of

inspiration. Where do you look to find it and/ or what kinds of

sources most inspire you?  

"I am inspired by life. But I am also inspired by death. I think the fact that I am totally

aware of our mortality is what makes me hang on to this whole artistic pursuit. I find

inspiration when I chase after the big picture and find glimpses of it.

Artists inspire me: Alexander McQueen, Tim Burton, Marina Abramovic, Picasso, Maurizio

Cattelan.  I love to learn. I am inspired by what I read. I am moved by the sermons of Martin

Luther King, Jr., stories about the life of VanGogh, essays by Emerson, plays by my brother,

Eric Bland, and wow, so many more I fail to list here. My nephew, Jack, inspires me to love

bigger. I think documentaries are fascinating. I hang around smart people, and I listen."

Cooking from scratch just brings a whole new element to your food. Not only does it taste and look better, but you can control the ingredients to make sure you are putting just food and not chemicals into your body. Food is a subject that I could just go on and on about. But I digress, mostly to spare you, and continue on to show you a lovely dinner I created this week:

1. Make mayonnaise. 2. Chop ingredients.

3. Assemble cole slaw. 4. Make potato salad.

5. Cook BBQ turkey burgers. 6. Grill homemade honey wheat buns.

7. Assemble plate. (with out of season blackberries that I couldn't resist!)

Ideally some day I would love to grow our food. There's just something about the idea of making mayonnaise with our own eggs, adding relish to the potato salad from our own cucumber pickles, and grinding our own turkey meat for the burgers that makes my eyes shine. But for now, we are not land owners, so that's a stretch.

This spring and summer though, I'm planning on starting a small rooftop garden which will most likely be a few tomato plants peppered with a couple types of herbs. But it's exciting. And I'm hopeful.

A few weeks ago, I blogged about my January challenge project with my etsy team Blogging Business Artisans. One of my teammates, Edi of Memories for Life Scrapbooks mentioned that she would be more than willing to take this project (pink, turquoise, and white tea towels) off my hands. I delightfully agreed, to which she countered, "What if we make a trade?"

Now, there's nothing that I love more than an art trade. Getting beautiful handmade items and art in exchange for your own seems even more just than for money; it's like trading blood, sweat, & tears for the same.

We decided that she'd get my tea towels (and since I felt they were quite novice) one of my heart brooches as well, and that I'd receive a set of her beautiful wooden engraved owl magnets. I think we're both quite happy with the trade:) Read Edi's account here.

1. When you aren't working hard online or by hand, what are you usually up to?

"I am often working by hand whether or not I'm creating something to sell simply because I enjoy it. In addition to making jewelry, my creative passions include counted cross-stitch and making greeting cards. I also like to work by hand in the kitchen, cooking and baking. My husband and I love living in Milwaukee and get out and enjoy the city whenever we can either by ourselves or with family or friends. We love trying new restaurants, visiting the art museum, heading over to the zoo, catching symphony concerts, and more."

"It's definitely counted cross-stitch. I usually take on projects that take over a year to complete, making the idea of parting with them pretty much impossible. "

"My family. I am really lucky to have an awesome little family of my own: Jake and Angel. Jake and I are lucky to have a lot of immediate and extended family members in the Midwest, too. "

"Learning How to Smile by Everclear. It's about how you can get through anything in life, no matter how tough, if you have someone you love with you."

So I continue on my Sewing 101 voyage inspired by my etsy team Blogging Buisness Artisans' January challenge to try new art media. This week I've made a lovely set of linen embroidered napkins with mitered corners and a matching linen table runner.

Project # 1: Tea Towels with simple fold over hem and top stitch.

Project #3 in 1-2-3-SEW was to create a table runner with flatware pockets (I didn't like the look of the pockets on this project so I'm postponing them for something else). I've got these lovely linen curtains that we're no longer using in our bedroom since we installed blinds, so I figured I'd repurpose them into a matching table runner & napkins set for our own kitchen since that fabric would match nicely.

So that means a revisit to project #2, which is totally fine by me since I both enjoyed it and have not quite mastered that skill yet. My stitches were a bit shaky so I figured the additional practice couldn't hurt.

I also wanted to give myself an added challenge, so I decided to try my hand with machine embroidery to border each item. I think it gives them a finished look, and adds a bit of flavor to the otherwise straight forward linen fabric.

I've still got a bit of a shaky hand at both fabric cutting and stitching, but I'm hoping to work those issues out as I continue to work through this great book. Next week I'll be starting a new chapter focusing on pillows and introducing quilting. I'm definitely excited about this!

"Our names are Na Kim and Dierdre Shea, and we are artists who hand paint home goods. Our work is whimsical, personal, tongue-in-cheek, painterly and illustrative."

2. Your pieces seem to be a bit about color and design, but more about whimsy and humor. I love the idea of a household functional object that commands a bit of tongue in cheek before use. What inspires your work?

"We try our best to integrate beauty and fun into the form and function of everyday objects. We want our customers to enjoy our products while they use them."

3. Tell me a bit about your design process: How long might you spend on the average piece, conception through execution? Do you plan the painted design/ glaze treatment for each piece separate from form or does form inform your painting choices?

"Form definitely dictates what and how we paint. A design that looks elegant on one bowl can be unflattering on another. It's a very organic process but it still requires a lot of editing at times. The time we spend on each piece depends on the design and the form. Some designs get really complex, and some of the simple designs require more precision, which also takes time. We are learning and improving our process every day."

I just can't get enough of Alanis Morrissett.

What's not to love? 90's chick rocker with enough of an edge to make you feel like you're listening to something forbidden at 12 years old.

Plus she's Canadian. When I was digging her grooves in middle school (on my disc-man) I'd shut myself in my room and attempt to emulate that oh-so-foreign sounding yodel. And bringing back the harmonica? Priceless. I just couldn't get enough of her.

Remember this video? I remember laughing my head off when it gets to the chorus and she just dazes off and kind of sings along with herself. Almost a forward thinking nod to those pop stars who accidentally reveal their lip synching skills.

So these days I've been nostalgically adding her to my playlists- not so into the new stuff- but man, there's nothing like interjecting the sounds of Jagged Little Pill into your work day.

Market Research: Color Preference Results.

Thanks so much to any of you who contributed your two cents on my preference questions last week regarding your coat color and your favorite colors for winter accessories! I received a wealth of information via blog and twitter comments and I'd like to share the results with you:

* Other colors mentioned for scarves singularly: metallic, bronze, gold, turquoise, shades of blue, print, all bright colors.

Analysis: I've noticed that there are clear "popular" colors. This is where I will invest most of my time and concentration, but, I've been thinking that this does not mean I should ignore those single entry colors either.

As artists we have to remember that what differentiates us from a big box store is they generally sell only what is popular amongst the masses. We have the ability to personalize our work and sell to just one person. So I'll go ahead and offer up my work in orange and purple because you know what? Someone just might want to be different from the rest and I want to both encourage them and be the one to give them the option.

As a bit of follow up, I'm currently working on knitting up a few test cowls and scarves which I will ask your feedback on soon. I'm trying to work out great new stitch patterns and designs according to the knit wear trends for next year.

Thanks again for your help! I'm also currently brainstorming evolutions which I plan to implement in my purse line.

When you aren't crafting, what are you up to?

"There are other things to do? Haha! I do spend most of my time knitting, truth be told. My boyfriend and I watch a lot of movies, and I am usually knitting throughout. Knitting aside, we love going out to various restaurants to try new cuisines. Vietnamese is definitely a favourite, with sushi close behind. We also spend time playing with our dog, Winston Churchill. He's a pretty funny little guy."

What is your favorite crafty endeavor unrelated to your product line?

"I've been telling myself for a while that I need a hobby other than knitting. I have been dabbling in sewing lately. I used to sew quite a bit, I've made a few skirts and bags and such. I would really like to do more of that."

What's one thing in your life that makes you happy to think about?

"I am self employed. I am currently in the middle of working through all the paper work and what not to register myself as a business, and get my tax number and all that jazz. This has been a goal of mine since the beginning of high school. There was a series of events in my life that led me to being self employed. I'm not rich, by any means, but I am making enough to support myself. It makes me happy knowing that I am fully responsible for my success."

Name a song that you would put on your "life soundtrack".

"This is another tough one. My favourite music changes all the time. A constant favourite is Dance, Dance, by Fall Out Boy."

Tell us something else you'd like us to know about you.

"I went to Iceland in September of 2011 for just over a week. I would give nearly anything to be able to go back there. I tell everyone who ever mentions travelling, especially travelling to Europe, that they should go to Iceland. If you fly with Icelandair to Europe, you can have a stopover in Iceland for a few days, and do some crazy awesome things. So, if you are travelling any time in the future, definitely consider putting Iceland on your destination list!"

Last week I continued to work from 1-2-3 Sew. The second project was to make a set of napkins with mitered corners and double edging. I really enjoyed this project as well:

This was just enough of a challenge that I felt like I was learning something new without being overwhelming or too hard to understand. My stitches are still on the wonky side here and there, and some of the corners have loose thread, but I definitely enjoyed the process. These napkins don't really match our kitchen, but I made them with a friend in mind. So hopefully she'll forgive the weird stitches:)

I did, however, remember that I have some beautiful linen curtains we no longer need for our bedroom since we installed blinds. Those are getting cut up right now- they will match our kitchen beautifully, and I'd like some additional practice with this skill. PLUS, I've got enough left over linen to make project #3 in my book, a table runner with silverware pockets, so it'll all match nicely:

As per my Goals for 2012, I want to begin to refocus this blog. When I started writing, this was a space for my personal reflections as well as to document my crafty endeavors. As time went by and I added more and more to my plate, I have watched the blog slip a bit to the promotional side versus the personal side. I want to be more artful in all that I do, and I want to showcase that here for often.

As such, I'm dedicating Thursdays to a new column:

Confessions: Secrets You Don't Know About Me.

They may be juicy. They may be banal. They might be beautiful, melancholic, or both. But it will be me and honest and I invite you to partake.

I desperately need to be alone.

It makes me feel like a weirdo, but if I haven't had enough time to myself, by myself, I get snappy for no reason. I lOVE doing things alone. You can get in and out of stores, you can change your mind on a whim, and you can have the space to think.

The weird part? I'm alone all day long M-F, but that's not enough time sometimes.

The worry? I'm feeling the lady pang right now, you know, the one deep inside of you that rises up when it's time to reproduce. I LOVE kids and babies. Will I get snappy with them when they're around all the time or will that magically work itself out? I never really felt that way about my students when I was teaching (unless they were being especially bad), so I'm hoping that's a good sign....

Handmade for The Holidays.

I just realized that I was so caught up in what I made for the kids in my life that I neglected to showcase the gorgeous etsy lovelies that my very sweet hubby to be scored for me this holiday season:

I've been eyeing this amazing bag from Jenny N. for quite some time now. My old purse was handmade and gorgeous, but the fabric wore out (as it should) after heavy use for several years. Just time for new, and what a beauty it is! I feel so lucky and special when I carry it around town.

He also got me this necklace and these earrings from Verre Encore. I absolutely LOVE them and wear them all the time. The necklace is great because it is reversible- the other side is the same shade of turquoise as the earrings, so I can wear them as a set too. I love that the necklace is small and delicate and the earrings are big and bold. I don't like wearing huge jewelry together, do love wearing one bold thing paired with a few other daintier items, so they're perfect together.

And finally, he also got me these two gorgeous rings from The Sly Fox. He had to be sneaky with the sizing as they are custom made to order, but he did a great job and they fit flawlessly! I wear the black ring almost daily, and save the turquoise one for when special pops of color are required.

If you've never visited or bought from these shops, I highly recommend checking them out. Everything is so well made and absolutely gorgeous! Thanks again ladies for your beautiful handiwork, and a big smooch to my man for doing such a great job too!

Market Research.

I have decided that this year I want to take as much time as I can to plan, research, design, and make a new knitwear line to debut in Fall/ Winter 2012.

I'm really excited about this because:

a) I'm tired of old style of scarves. They were beautiful, but scarves are out and cowls are in. They're loud and bright and I'm ready to be muted and explore new knitted stitches rather than color patterns.

b) I've never taken the time to plan this extensively before. I think it will help a lot to gather data from customers, and research trends before I execute anything. I tend to be impulsive, so this will be a big, but much needed step for me.

So I'm asking you, dear blog readers, to please help me gather a bit of information:

1) What color is your winter coat?
2) Do you prefer a thick, chunky scarf, or like a lighter, more airy look?
3) Name 3 colors you would personal wear in a scarf/ hat/ gloves.

Last week I discussed how I'm challenging myself to work through 1-2-3 Sew by Ellen Luckett Baker to strengthen my machine sewing skills. I was inspired to finally do this by my etsy team, Blogging Business Artisans, as our challenge for January is to make something in a different media or using a different technique.

This past weekend, I completed the 1st of 33 projects!

Set of 3 Tea Towels

It was pretty easy, actually, and I found myself having fun too. That's a vital thing for me: improving my mood while machine sewing. I'm used to having to push through frustrations, and that tends to put a damper on the rest of the day for me. I really want to feel successful with sewing, and after this project I'm hopeful that this book will help with that.

The project was to make a set of tea towels using fat quarters. I just used a few I had laying around so the fabric isn't all that great or expensive, but it's just for practice, so I figured it didn't matter quite yet. I definitely plan to get inspired by gorgeous fabric for later on projects though.

I went ahead and washed, ironed, and cut the fabric for the next project while I was at it too:

This challenge will be to make a set of napkins with mitered corners and sewn in cord hooks for hanging. Stay tuned, I'll post this next week!

OK ya'll I know it's only the 12th of January, a little over a WHOLE month until Valentine's Day. But some years I just go gaga over the day. Not in real life I mean, to be honest, I don't want (or need) gobs of chocolate and all that. Original Watercolor Painting- "Today Love Smiled On Me."

This is an original watercolor piece I painted as part of my Project Inspiration Series. I felt moved to make it one day, and I decided it would be a great Valentine's addition to my shop. What a great reminder of how love carries us through the day, no matter what we have to face.

Engraved Keepsake Box

Going in a bit of a different direction, Edi's engraved wooden keepsake boxes would make for a very meaningful Valentine's Day gift to a loved one. You could use it as a jewelry box, scrapbook, photo storage, ect. Edi even speaks of a gentleman who ordered one to store the remains of his brother, as a gift to his family. This thought may be a bit morbid, but very meaningful to someone who has had to face a similar situation.

Ever since I got a new sewing machine I've been feeling frustrated. For years I've been hand sewing for anything that came up that needed some stitch work. It was fine, but took a really long time of course. But I came to be comfortable with it. I knew exactly what I was doing and how to make strong and pretty stitches.

Then came the sewing machine, which I am very thankful for and absolutely adore. But I've come to resent it a bit because I just can't seem to get anything right using it. It's not the fault of the machine, it's solely mine. Which makes me feel even worse (can't even sew straight and I'm literally having nightmares about tension).

So when The Blogging Business Artisans (my etsy team) introduced our January challenge, to make something using a new technique or media, I knew this had to be my focus. I went out and bought 1-2-3 Sew, an instructional book I've been eyeing for a while now, and am committing myself to working through the projects and blogging about my progress. While my first project will be for the challenge, I will work through the entire book to build my machine sewing skills and hopefully be happier with my abilities by the end of it!

The first project is to sew a set of tea towels, and I'll get to have a bit of fun with printing on them as well.

I'm really excited about this project in particular- a "doodle bag" with slots for pencils. I'm hoping to be able to modify it into a knitting bag instead:)

Another element of challenge I'm adding to this project will be buying as little new fabric as I can. I've got so much stored that I'm pretty sure I can find what I need for most projects within my own walls!

Before we went out of town for the holidays, I decided to come up with a knitting project to work on just for me. It is so rare that I actually have time or even think to do this, so I was very excited! I chose to make a long cowl, the kind that wraps around your neck 3 times and can have a great layered look.

I found this beautiful superwash merino wool in black in a worsted weight. The project was shaping up nicely now; this yarn is so soft it's incredible. It's machine washable even though it's wool! AND it was a lightweight yarn which would knit up to be light and airy, not heavy or bulky. Anywho, I skeptically bought the last two hanks on the rack, knowing that it wouldn't quite be enough, but I figured I could just scout it out online if need be.

As predicted, I knit through all of the yarn and do want more length to the cowl. After not finding the yarn for sale in any online retailer, I found the company's website. It turns out (and of course) that this company only sells wholesale brick and mortar. Which gave me the idea....

I've been wanting to design a new line of knitwear for next winter. It would be so much easier to commit to a brand of yarn that is perfect for the job, comes in an array of colors, and how great would it be to have it in stock at any given point? Thinking on it.....

"I have my bachelor's degree in elementary education and my master's degree in special education. I taught K-4 special education while my husband was in med school. I burned out on just about everything during those 4 years and am taking a break from teaching. Now I'm freelance writing, running my Etsy shop, and running almost everything at home. I work longer hours than I ever did teaching, but I love it.

"I got into jewelry making because I've always loved beads. I am constantly inspired by new beads that I find. I love experimenting with new designs and color combinations. Usually one project leads me right into another one so I very rarely have a shortage of ideas. I also get inspiration from browsing beautiful work on Etsy, on blogs, and in catalogues."

"I am really proud of my dagger bracelet design. Although there are a number of people who make dagger bracelets with a similar fringe style, I designed the base for this completely on my own."

Last week I posted part I of my segment handmade for kids where I showcased some Christmas presents I made for some wonderful kids in my life. This week I continue!

This little snuggle bug has an elephant nursery. I figured I'd contribute to his yet unknown favorite animal collection by making him an elephant stuffy from this pattern. I think it turned out quite well, but let me tell you- I will not be making another one any time soon!

He was quite a feat as well, but finished and will be much enjoyed by a rambunctious hulk-loving three year old!

The kiddies all enjoyed their gifts. Sometimes homemade toys can be a bit hard to compete with all of the electronic toys with their gadgets and sounds! But I know that they will still be loved and appreciated!

Hello all, I'm back after a long and lovely holiday! And I have to extend a lofty welcome to 2012! This will be a wonderful year, I can feel it!

New Year's Resolutions have always bugged me since they tend to fall into the "good intentions" pile and many let them fizzle come the end of January. But I do think that taking time to reflect on what goals you've accomplished during the past year and setting some realistic new ones for the coming year is a healthy way to self-assess and improve your life little by little. Last year I started a bucket list segment (here too) in which I listed a few personal and business goals/ accomplishments each month.

I'd like to take a bit of time to review some of last year's accomplishments and set some new goals for this year too!

Personal Goals

Fitness/ Health 2011- Last year I got my butt into gear and hit some major goals here. I got myself down to a healthy weight by following this program: Alton Brown Live & Let Diet (essentially just kicking out processed foods and eating only fresh and whole foods). I also successfully exercised 5 times/ week, all year, and even joined a pool!!

2012- After an end of year/ holiday slump, I got myself back on the fitness train (Tuesday). I'm currently refocusing on the same routine as 2011 to shed just a few pounds and maintain.

Major Events 2011- Last year I enjoyed planning a friend's handmade wedding, meeting some gorgeous new babies, did some great hikes, and Painted/ Renovated the upstairs.

2012- This year we'll continue to renovate the house, focusing on painting the main level and updating the kitchen. I'm sure I'll go on some lovely new outdoorsy adventures, but the main even this year will be our wedding!!

Business Goals

2011 Accomplishments:

1. Advertising- I spend a good bit of money on ads this past year, especially November- December. Essentially I was able to eliminate some places that are not worth the ads for me and some places that I plan to pay for ad space again.

2. The Blog- I'm always learning and growing here! In 2011 I reached 200 followers, posted on average 5 days/ week, added some ad space, and formatted the blog design from amateur to what I will call amateur awesome!

3. Craft Shows- I set a goal to try one in 2011, and I actually did 2 holiday shows. I made double my booth fee back at both, so I'd say that's pretty good!

4. Registered- Back in march I started the process of registering N.Fallon Design Studio with the USPTO. I received my official notice of registration mid December. So I'm now a TM!! I also registered my trade name in MD too (but that was much easier).

5. The books- Haven't done them yet for this quarter, but estimating in my earnings from the craft shows I may come in just shy of breaking even this year. Which to me is wonderful!

2012 Goals:

1. Ads- I will continue to seek out new venues and work out a budget for this this year!

2. The Blog- I've been on a bit of a plateau here for some time. I will invest time researching ways to get more traffic to the blog. I'd also like to be more soulful with my posts this year. I feel the blog slipping into mostly promotion and losing the personality I've come to reveal through my writing. More personality. More writing.

3. Craft Shows- This year I hope to expand my show list. I'd love to do 1 spring show, 1-2 Fall shows, and hopefully 2 holiday shows again.

4. Marketing- I don't spend that much of my time here. I need to reinstate my Thursday market research days and stick to them!

5. The books- I'd like to pull myself out of the red this year. I think with the addition of more craft shows and hopefully (gulp) getting my work into a brick and mortar store I can do this!

Secret Santa Reveal!

Some of you may know that I am on the etsy team Blogging Business Artisans. We decided to do secret santa amongst our group as a fun way to celebrate the season with one another.

My secret santa package is from Deb, The Storybeader. I was so excited when it arrived! She included some lovely chocolates in my gift- spectacularly good:)

She purchased a few handspun yarns for me in 50% wool and 50% mohair. I'm so excited to use them! I must come up with a super special project just for me!

And finally, Deb sweetly included one of her handmade journals with my gift. I haven't yet decided how I will use this treasure- perhaps a design sketchbook. I just love the composition of the cover- isn't it striking?!?

Well friends, as we close in on the Holidays, I felt moved to say goodbye to some old friends. Here are some N. Fallon Design Studio originals that have found new homes for the holidays:

Both online and at my craft shows this season I had to let go of a few of my coin purses, clutches, and knit purses. I'm always sad to see them go, but also happy that they are off to fulfill their destiny in someone else's house. It will also be nice to have the room for my new product, the wristlet wallet which will be debuting in January!

I'm happy to say goodbye to most of my scarf inventory. I'm discontinuing the line, so if you'd like to pick up a lovely handmade scarf for a steal, I've got just 3 left at 50% off.

4. I find that the arts of handwork such as knitting and crocheting often carry such personal stories for people. Whether our work is fashion forward or granny-tastic we are still giving a nod to tradition. Do you have any personal stories about how you learned to knit, knitters of the past, or how you connect tradition to your own work to share?

"I learned how to knit when I was in Pathfinders, which is the group you join after finishing Girl Guides here in Canada. It was a weekend event just down the street from my home. We learned how to sew, iron, cross stitch, macrame, knit and a bunch of other similar activities. I don't remember how to do anything from that weekend other than knitting and sewing. I have often flipped the way knitting gets passed on. I am in my early 20s, and I have taught some knitting skills to women in their 50s and 60s."

5. What do you consider your most ingenious product/ creation and why?

"Definitely my prom dress!!! I finished high school in 2007, and I still love looking at this dress. I bought the corset and lace shrug, and made the skirt out of bridal satin. Yes, those are Jones Soda labels on the skirt. That soda was a high school obsession, and I always love doing something out of the norm!"

It's a quiet day around here. Since having family up for Thanksgiving, it's been a whirlwind of activity around here trying to get ready for holiday shows and Christmas itself.

I'm ready for a time out. So while the kitties enjoy the sun, nap, and hunt shadows, I'll be busy playing catch up with the unruly mess that our house has become in the last few weeks. Hopefully I can find the bottom of the pile of laundry and get our fridge stocked up again!

How It Went.

This past weekend I sold at the Charm City Craftivists' Last Chance Holiday Show. This was a small show with just 25 vendors. It was also the first year they had it, so I was worried about attendance.

It actually turned out pretty well for me- despite a steady stream of very few folks all day, I ended up making about 2.5 times my booth fee. I suppose what you get at a show like this is people that research craft shows to shop; they don't just go because it's something to do.

A lot of other crafters who've done shows this holiday season have been reporting that folks were only looking at $10 and under priced items. I found this to be true as well. My biggest sellers were $3, $8, & $10, and I only sold 1 item at $40, and 3 items at $20. I think for future shows I'm going to try to come up with more smaller ticket items as well.

Overall, I had a great time talking with the other vendors, chatting with the patrons, and watching my favorite sales partner in action (really, Mr. M did a great job sealing quite a few deals). There's talk of this group putting on a spring show, which I will definitely participate in.

Over the last few years I've been blessed with the addition of many new family members & friends in the wee ones department. I've always loved to make gifts for the holidays, and this year I decided to focus on and celebrate the little ones through my craft:

*I found this easy and fun to make shaped crayon project on My Favorite Finds. I wanted to create a myriad of different shapes, but ended up just choosing one mold. After all, realistically how much $$ can you justify spending on crayons??

"Moss Rock Pottery-Gate" Updates

First of all, I want to sincerely extend my gratitude for your support in regards to what I'm calling "Moss Rock Pottery-Gate." It's good to get confirmation that I was doing the right thing by standing up for myself like that. I also realized that he had already left me positive buyer feedback, so with that threat off the table (seriously, go read the feedback he leaves for buyers that challenge him, what a bully!) I decided that whether or not I actually got a refund didn't matter anymore and made my peace with the incident.

Secondly, we have thankfully come to a resolution (bonus in my book):

After having sent him that convo that you saw in the previous post, leaving negative seller feedback, reporting a non-delivery to etsy, AND a dispute with paypal, I got his attention.

It seems that all he really cared about was the negative feedback, and I kind of assumed as much.

MossRock:

"So, you have yet to hear if I will refund your money?

You asked for your money on the same day that you left that feedback.
That's just low down and dirty.

I'm glad you won't be using my pottery. You don't deserve it."

Me:

"No, I asked for my money back 3 MONTHS after I made the order. Either you refund the money or you don't. End of story."

On October 2, I bought this lovely toothbrush holder from

I was so excited! A weird thing to be excited about, I know, but I had just painted our master bedroom and bathroom and couldn't wait to reward myself with a few great etsy touches around the room to finish it off. So I bought the lovely toothbrush holder with wide holes to fit the toothbrushes that we like.

Skip ahead a bit. I'm waiting and waiting. No word from the seller and nothing in the mail. Finally I contact him and he tells me he's backlogged. Fine. I don't care, just label the item MTO instead of ready to ship. Wait longer and nada. I contact him again and he gives me some story about how he's getting divorced and yada, yada, yada. (Now, don't think I'm being insensitive here. After reading through his negative feedback I realized how full of stories and excuses this guy is. So I'm not sure if I even beleive he is getting a divorce anyway!) OK, a little TMI, but get it to me soon. Another month goes by and NOTHING. So I contact him AGAIN, and this time he doesn't respond at all.

It is now December 7th, over 3 MONTHS since I made the order and I decided to jump a bit outside of character and get nasty. So I wrote him this email:

"I must say I'm getting pretty sick of being dicked around here. This is way out of character for me, and seeing as I've been nothing by absolutely nice and understanding about the unreasonably LONG wait for my order with absolutely NO communication initiated by you in regards to its status, I'm demanding to cancel my order and receive a full refund.

I ordered a toothbrush holder from you on October 2, and it's now over 3 MONTHS later. To be honest, I couldn't care less about your personal problems. As a patron of a business I expect professional treatment regardless of your issues at home. If I were you, and getting backlogged on orders (which we ALL would be GRATEFUL to have) I would put my shop on vacation in order to catch up.

The worst of it, in my opinion, is that you don't seem to care about keeping your customers informed. If an item is MTO LABEL IT SO and include estimated wait time. If you are swamped- take steps to initiate communication before customers have to leave negative feedback and bitch and moan to you.

As a fellow etsy seller I am appalled at your customer service. Isn't that why we beg people to choose hand made in the first place? You are not just hurting your own business but turing people away from buying in the hand made community.
Even worse, I am so disappointed and sorry that I won't even get to see the quality of your work that you were so raving about.

Too bad. I want a refund."

What's worse? There's plenty of others he's doing the same thing to of course. I'm not the only one. And I've heard that he leaves negative buyer feedback calling us impatient! The NERVE!! If I get a negative review for making the mistake of buying from a crappy seller, what can I do?!

We'll see what happens, if I actually get a response and a refund or not. I think just writing it and knowing that he'll read it made me feel better than getting my money back would.

**And I'm naming names because I'm SICK of crappy sellers not being held accountable. And I'm SICK of it being in bad blood to name names. You know why? Because everyone else works SO Hard to keep customers informed of their order status and otherwise provide good communication/ customer service. I also work hard to remain professional on etsy and totally resent others who don't. We're one giant community- and we should all work collectively to educate others about how great it is to buy handmade, not discourage them.

***UPDATED- Just filed a Non-Delivery report with etsy. Etsy will now force him to resolve the issue or face shop suspension. I've also filed for a refund through paypal, but even though they leave the case open, I am not eligible with them because the claim is more than 45 days from purchase.

So much going on!

Hi all. Just popping in late today to tell you that I'm exhausted! This past Saturday was my first holiday show and it was a lot of work, but overall great. I've got another one coming up next Saturday as well. I'll tell you all about them tomorrow.

Also, I've been a busy bee as I'm attempting to make all of our holiday cards this year and presents for all of the kids in my life:) It's a grand project, but I'm well on my way.

I've also been busy cranking out pieces for my new line of wallets debuting in January. I'm so excited to share with you what's been going on here at N.Fallon Design Studio, but I'm afraid today's just not the day! I look forward to sharing snippets of the above this week and next!

How it Went.

This past Saturday I was one of 40 vendors at the Notre Dame of Maryland University Holiday Bazaar. Overall it was an OK show. Since it was my first real show ever, it feels nice to have that under my belt and I suppose it was good that it was slow since I probably would have been flustered otherwise.

People mostly briefly browsed, but I did have enough sales to earn my booth fee back plus some which was all that I was hoping for. I suppose that's what you get with a smaller show and I already feel ready to take on more!

One negative: Mr. M came to help and at one point overheard some ladies being shocked at the $60 price tag on my purses. I think this is just further proof that this wasn't really the right show for my work. Not everything here was handmade, and there were an awful lot of handmade vendors selling cheap-o stuff (you can tell the quality right away when you're an artist, but I'm not so sure others can or even care). I.E. the lady next to me sold jewelry most of which was under $5. That says A LOT about this show I'm afraid.

To sum up, I don't know that I would want to do this show next year, but I am happy to have had the experience. This coming Saturday I've got another show lined up as well at the MD State Boychior for the Arts Center here in Baltimore. It will most likely be about the same as the other show, maybe even a small crowd since this is a first year show with just under 25 vendors. We'll see, but I remain hopeful!

Craft Show Preparation.

I'm so excited to have gotten into 2 holiday craft shows this season. The first one being this Saturday and the second being next Saturday, I've been hard at work building up my inventory with breaks for some kitten love of course.

I wanted to create something special to show customers my appreciation, so I came up with these "Have A Heart" knit broach Freebies. Each pin is accompanied by a heart related idiom. They'll be free with all sales.

And finally, I think I've come up with the perfect way to display all of my goodies. I've added in a few more racks and boxes for height and I'm using command hooks to hold merchandise to the flat side of boxes so that I can fit more in. What do you think? Any more suggestions?

A Bit of Organization.

Last week while working out I was watching some talk show with an organization specialist offering tips to clean up your desk.

I am OBSESSED with organizing. I love it. I love arranging. And then rearranging. And my desk area has been a bit cluttered lately with everything I've got going on, so I decided to take a few of her tips:

1. Use a bulletin board for an "visual to-do list" rather than filling it with pictures. I had my board set up as an inspiration board, but really it just housed 5-10 year old postcards from artists I like. It was pretty, but I ditched the cards and now it will house daily lists, ideas, daily calendar, gift cards & discounts I need to remember to use, etc.

2. Use your calendar efficiently. I'm pretty good at this, but lately I've been wanting to combine Mr. M & my calendars so we can see what each other are up to and combine our events. The organizer suggested putting the calendar on the back of a kitchen cabinet door if you want to hide it- brilliant!

3. Get the best use out of your desk. For me this tip meant moving some stuff around a bit so that I can get the new sewing machine off my drafting table and give it a permanent spot that will not interfere with my blogging spot. So viola'- I've got a spot to sew, to blog, and to make!

Over the last week I've been feeling the trifecta in action- I'm more organized, don't feel so claustrophobic, and actually enjoy turning my chair from one task to the next as I move about my day.

1. Please tell us a little bit about what you do.

"I'm a graphic designer who designs crochet animal scarf patterns. I have also designed a few other crochet patterns, as well as a few knitting patterns. I'm quite taken with the animal scarf patterns now, so that is what I'm concentrating on. I never would have thought, as I was making my first animal scarf, the Cat Cuddler, that I would still be making animal scarves months and months later. I remember thinking, 'I don't want to make another one of these.' That's because I didn't enjoy all the bits and pieces involved: legs, ears etc. I used to be an avid knitter, and preferred knitting one-piece in-the-round sweaters. Well, all that has changed! Also, I have a passion for colored-pencil art, but I haven't done any in years, since I finished design school in 2001. Someday I plan on getting back to creating with colored pencils."

2. Keeping our work fresh means constantly seeking new sources of inspiration. Where do you look to find it and/ or what kinds of sources most inspire you?

"Back in design school, color was my greatest source of inspiration. The play of color, the relationships between color, the transitions from one color to another. I especially liked working with complementary colors (those opposite one another on the color wheel). I enjoyed trips to art museums to see how other artists played with color. These days, working with yarn and crochet, I would say it's more about texture and shape. Color is still involved a great deal - I like working with Malabrigo Merino yarn to design my animal scarves. They have a great range of color, and their colors are subtly variable, lending a lovely nuance to the colors of the scarves. Also, I want my designs to come from my own efforts, so I look at photos of real animals (just by doing a Google image search) to study the shape and coloring of the animal for each scarf I want to design. So in that way, Mother Nature is my inspiration for my designs. I look for interesting shapes when choosing which animal to try next. Also, "cuteness" is a factor - I want to choose animals that will appeal to others."

3. I think your animal crochet patters are just adorable! What inspired you to create these designs?

"I saw a stuffed fox stole on an Etsy treasury one day. Being a cat lover myself, I thought cat lovers would appreciate a cat scarf they can make for themselves, and so undertook designing my own cat scarf crochet pattern. I made two cats, a dog, a seal pup, then a raccoon, followed by the others. I am currently working on a reindeer, an am planning a pig, an elephant and a red panda. The possibilities are endless."

Lately I've been obsessed with minimal, geometric, gold jewelry. This is very odd for me since I never wear gold. I'm sort of a silver jewelry junky, but I think some of these pieces are swaying me in the other direction. With the price of silver lately, gold is the way to go!

Just A Little Note...

Hi all, this week is going to be a tough one: full of lots of hard work, but with a lovely reward at the end. I'm hosting my family for thanksgiving, which will be wonderful. But as you know, that means cleaning the house, shopping right as everyone else in the world is, cooking for 3 days, and trying to make sure I'll be OK for the craft show coming up the following weekend.

So I'm swamped for now. I've still got posts scheduled for the week, but I have to apologize in advance as I know I will have little time to spare for blog visiting and networking this week.

1. Please tell us a little bit about what you do.

"I am a graphic designer who left the big city in search of my fortune. (Actually I just really wanted to live in the countryside.)

I have recently settled in Napier in the Overberg (near the bottom, most Southern tip of Africa) and apart from discovering the joys of no traffic and growing your own vegetables, I have had time to indulge my passion for knitting.

It all started a long time ago when I decided to knit a cover for my ageing washing machine. I loved the result so much, that I experimented with various patterns and wools and shapes and sizes; using knitting as a functional art form. It opened up a whole world of possibilities, but back then I still had a day job and knitting took a back seat.

So when I found myself sitting on my porch staring at the cows in the valley, I decided it was time to knit in earnest. I now knit in a thoroughly contemporary way using a chunky Aran style and do winter 'jerseys' for ottomans and armchairs, funky cross-shaped scatter cushions and pretty much anything that takes my fancy."

"Looking at magazines or books helps - there’s always a colour or a texture or a bit of something that fires the brain up. But there’s inspiration all around us. Its always there."

3. As a fellow knitter, I respect the time and work you put into your items. Typically, how many hours are invested in a piece such as the armchair slipcover?

"About 90 hours. I knitted that one in a week on a very tight deadline, knitting about 12 hours per day. "

Lately I've been knitting up a storm. You see, I've had this idea spinning around in my head for quite some time now. I love to create bags and purses for people who love simplicity, much like me. In my line already I have the coin purse, a tiny zipper pocket to store small wallet-like items. I also have a clutch design, but I've been dreaming of something in between. Finally, all of these thoughts came to fruition, and now I have a hybrid:

The result is a bit bigger than the coin purse at 6 inches wide by 4 inches deep, not quite as big as the clutch. This product (yet to be named) will be more wallet-y than my coin purses, containing pockets and pouches inside to organize all of your wallet-y stuff. It also swipes the wristlet from my clutches so that you can be free from a purse on those days that you want to carry just the bare essentials. At the moment I'm still developing the wristlet component, which will be detachable to offer you the choice!

In summary, this is my most versatile product yet, able to serve as a wallet in your purse, or a simple purse outside of your purse;)

A note about their pattern/ color availability: I've got a dichotomy of design lines going on here. The first will be my seasons collection including the color schemes show above titled "Fall" and "Spring". I've also got colors worked out for winter and summer, and other patterns worked out for each color scheme, soon to be revealed! The second collection that these little guys will be available in called Sparkle, my glamour line. I'm making you wait to see anything from that one though, so stay tuned!
